Village People lightweight on light rail solutions

At last night’s City of Sydney Council meeting, Greens Cr Chris Harris moved a budget amendment to include a contribution by the City of Sydney Council to a light rail link between Railway Square and Circular Quay down Castlereagh Street.
“After two years of the council lobbying the State Government to build a light rail link with no response, the Greens believe that it’s time for the Council to change strategy and to show some leadership. What we advocate is for the City Council to contribute $50 million over the next three years. This would represent a one-third contribution to the cost of the rail link. Council would then seek a partnership with the State and Federal governments to contribute the other two thirds.” Greens Cr. Chris Harris said.
“The light rail link down Castlereagh Street is consistent with Council’s policy of improving public transport and less reliance on private motor vehicles. There would also be significant benefit for business and retailers through the rejuvenation of the southern end of Castlereagh Street.”
“It’s good for business, makes it fast and easy to get around the city and is great for the environment.” Cr. Harris said
Councillor Harris was disappointed at Monday’s meeting when the Lord Mayor’s team of independents failed to support his amendment.
“I was amazed at the lack of support by the independent team given their persistent and public statements supporting light rail over the last two years. However the Greens will not give up and will continue to work to gather support from the independents to finance a much need light rail link for the city.” Cr. Harris said.
