Sydney caged
September 3rd, 2007
Even as our city is being enclosed in brand-new heavy duty wire mesh, John Howard has posted a YouTube clip claiming there is no need to protest because the APEC agenda is all about preventing climate change and reducing poverty.
Since when have we had to incarcerate our city to speak of climate change and poverty?
With loudspeakers and surveillance cameras installed on street corners, helicopters overhead and police in numbers we have rarely, if ever seen before, is this the real legacy of APEC?

Alfred St, Circular Quay (above).

Above: Welcome to sunny Sydney – a Council smartpole banner welcomes APEC to Sydney but the fence tells another story.

Above: Sydney views looking north towards Circular Quay. Or is it Guantanamo Bay?

Above: More ‘Sydney Views’ or so says the banner on the Museum of Sydney. Part of the Police contingent meets on a towaway zone inside the cage.

Above: A caged Federal Police car joins contingents of police on pushbikes, motorbikes, in paddy wagons and on buses — not to mention helicopters. And this was only Sunday, three days before George Bush’s arrival.
